Photographs bring people together; it brings spectators closer to the athletes or an observer closer to a location or an event. Capturing the spirit of a moment, a game, a location or a person through photography allows a unique way to tell a story and bring the world to life in a real and present way.
Capturing action shots, finding that one picture that will express the essence of the game or the athlete, is challenging. And yet, when you snap that "one" picture, it makes it all worthwhile. My cousin and brother were frequent subjects. They didn't always appreciate being the object of my attention because for every good picture there were likely 10 embarrassing ones. All part of the process, is what I tell them, while hiding my smile.
Animals can be interesting to photograph, but it takes lots of patience and snaps of the camera to capture them doing something that conveys an idea, thought or story-worthy photo. My dog Jasper is particularly expressive, so he was an easy model, plus he was free.
Nature and people are some of my favorite subjects. It's never a bad day when it's spent outside and the outdoors is full of photo opportunities. Traveling has also afforded me lots of options for pictures. I've been lucky to go to Spain, Norway, and Peru with my camera in tow. Sometimes, however, it's the simple things in my own backyard that made for the best subjects.
